I nearly slipped to my death tonight.
Funnily enough. I go out for a lot of hikes around where I am.
If you’ve ever knocked about “up norf” here in England. You’ll know there’s some good spots.
More so Rivington and also The Lake District.
Anywho.
Usually it’s a solo mission. Me, a podcast or a training or audiobook versus how long my legs can carry my body until I collapse.
But lately I’ve been going out with a mate whose going through a bit of a marital separation. Yeah yeah bro stuff and what not.
And the common conversations we always seem to lean on are being human and doing cool shit while inspiring others.
You also know I’m not one of those clowns on social media that make videos and say this like “Everyone asks me this and so…” blah blah.
Yeah I get replies to my wildly unhinged emails and maybe 3-5 replies a week about certain topics that I always talk about…
(Ad copy, marketing, content creation, art, life and everything else in between)
But a recurring theme which so happened to come up within the conversation I had with a mate while nearly falling to my demise pops up.
The variation is always “So how do you find content that you’re genuinely interested in?” and honestly with all of this AI bullshit. I’d say any books or videos / essays written or crafted before 2020 would be your best start…
But also (And I’m slowly warming up to the idea) is to just make the things and talk about the same things that you’re interested in and how you’d apply it to your life, cause no matter how far you are. There is a reader or a watcher who might be a step or two behind you wanting to the same thing.
So the whole “Learn, do, teach.” is even more important.
We can spend hours doom scrolling the internets or we can seek out and create things that past and future self and even others might find beneficial.
It’s why I treat these emails like we’re sitting at a pub having a pint or I’m just brain farting into the wild online void.
Writing begets more writing. Writing is a thinking persons game and well, if you don’t want to hand over your emotions to whatever social media platform is screwing you over. This is the best thing you can ever do to indoctrinate your own audience to your ways.
So think about it. If you can’t find stuff you’d consume. Create the stuff past and future self would consume and then just put a buy button at the end.
You never know. You’ll pick up some fans, customers and awesome people to share your work with in the future…
Stephen Walker.
P.S. My home boy Kimanzi published a book back in 2015 which hits the nail on the head on a few ideas shared. Would highly recommend picking it up if you really want to get away from the influencer hamster wheel…
